iPhone gets new Ultimate Genesis storefront

Starting next month iPhone users who have fond memories of Genesis titles from their past will have an easier way to find and buy some of those games. Some old school titles are already available in the App Store but they are standalone games. According to Gizmodo here’s where the new storefront comes in.

Starting in February you will be able to download Sega’s Ultimate Genesis. The free app acts like a virtual console for already existing and eventually newly released emulated Genesis titles on your iPhone. The app is free and is packaged with Space Harrier II. Other Genesis titles already available are:

  • Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
  • Shining Force: $2.99
  • Golden Axe: $4.99
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99

The service doesn’t really bring anything new to the table other than making it easier for users to play and buy Genesis titles, but that added convenience in itself makes the free download more than worth it.

iPhone gets Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

You have to feel bad for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The game has been released on both the PSP and the DS to pretty good critical acclaim but less then stellar sales.

To help make the game available to even more people, Rockstar released an iPhone version last night. And if you are just now finding that fact out join the club, not much fanfare (if any) followed the games latest re-release.

The game costs $9.99 at Apple’s App Store or on iTunes and  utilizes the iPhone’s touch screen instead of the DS’s stylus ans PSP’s D-pad. The graphics  are as go0d if not better then the versions previously released.

TellTale Games: “iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii”

The Captain Obvious award of the day goes to a TellTale programmer who made that exact statement in the TellTale Games forums. Fans of the game “Tales of Monkey Island” had been complaining about framerate issues exeperienced in the WiiWare version of that game.
“The voices and textures are the way they are because we’re limited to 40 megs for WiiWare titles. The PC versions of our games are usually 150+ megs, and most modern games range anywhere from 1-10 gigabytes or more. Talk to Nintendo about this one.
Frame rate issues will probably get sorted out eventually, but keep in mind that the Wii is just not a powerful console. An iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii, even.”
You would think that he might take such a bold statement back after having some time to think about what he said. But alas no. In a follow up comment he stands by his previous comment and then proceeds to throw the DS under the bus as well.
“I stand by them. The Wii and DS are extremely underpowered and their popularity doesn’t remove the hardware limitations.”
Unfortunately Nintendo couldn’t be reached for comment, they were too busy counting all of their money.

Resident Evil 4 confirmed for iPhone

re4_iphone

Earlier this afternoon Capcom announced what most of us already knew: that Resident Evil 4 would be coming to the iPhone.

The news came from a posting on Capcom’s Twitter account saying “News from Capcom Mobile: RE4 will be coming to iPhone end of July beginning with Japan, rest of world to follow shortly thereafter. Woo!”

Many of us already had clues this would be coming. Like the game being listed on the Japanese App Store, only to suspiciously be taken down soon after.

Between errant Tweets and App Store mishaps it seems like it’s getting harder and harder for developers and publishers to keep a secret. Not that they were good at it in the first place.

Check out leaked gameplay footage below.

Myst coming to iPhone

Cyan, the developers of Myst have decided that porting Myst to 345 different game systems (yes that is sarcasm) isn’t enough. They have now found a way to cram it into your iPhone and iPod Touch.  At over 700MB it will kick your phone’s memory in the nuts, but it might be worth it.

The app will only set you back $5.99 and Cyan is bragging that this game will be “better than the original Myst”. If you want to find out for yourself, you can click here to download it from the iTunes App Store.

Let me know what you think.

Mass Effect coming to iPhone

A recent survey has revealed that the Mass Effect franchise will be coming to your iPhone.

Mass Effect: Jacob’s Story will be a prequel to the console bound Mass Effect 2 and will revolve around ”a biotic-powered super-soldier who stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization’s greatest beacon of hope” named Jacob Taylor.

The game will not be an RPG, but instead be a top-down shooter with cartoonish styling. The app will set you back $2.99 and the game should last you for a little of two hours.

Depending on the success of this game it looks like we may see the Mass Effect franchise make an expansion to include more iPhone titles. And maybe even other portable devices as well.

WoW on your iPhone!?

Well it seems like someone has figured out a way to play World of Warcraft on their iPhone.  This is what looks to be authentic in-game video footage of someone actually playing the MMORPG on their iPhone. It’s embedded below for your viewing pleasure. Take a look:

As you can tell from the video the phone is running the Vollee client, which was confirmed last year as a mobile application capable of running Second Life. So it isn’t unreasonable to think that the Vollee client could also run WoW without too many issues.

But would playing WoW on your iPhone actually be any fun? You can see in the video that there are a lot of objects cramped onto that small screen. And using the touch controls looks a little clumsy. The game would be a hit of course because of it’s huge popularity, but I don’t think gamers should set their expectations too high. WoW is also a very social game, one of the reasons it is so popular. And from the video we can’t tell if voice chat is supported. If it isn’t, that too would be a drawback. This video seems to create more questions than it does answers.

If you want to read more about this head over to Kotaku. They have a pretty interesting artice on the subject and it’s worth a look.

Metal Gear Solid Touch = done

The “Complete Version” of Metal Gear Solid Touch is getting it’s finishing touches according to Kotaku.

Those of you who bought the original version already know that the game was a little on the short side. Worry not boys and girls help is on the way. Metal Gear Solid Touch ver 2.0.0 will have a bevy of new goodies for you to enjoy like: eight new mission stages, 20 new fancy wallpapers, and language support for French, German, Italian and Spanish. What no Swahili Konami? You are so racist.

The update will set you back about 10mb of phone memory bringing the total for both versions to 137mb.
