Capcom delays Dark Void until 2010 to avoid “crowded fall game season”

dark_void1

Another day goes by and yet another developer announces a pushed back release date. What was once a crowded fall 2009 gaming season has turned into a pathetic excuse for a launch window as yet another developer delays a release from this fall to winter 2010.

Following in just about every other developer’s footsteps so far this summer, Capcom today announced that Dark Void won’t be releasing this fall as promised. Instead it has been pushed back to the now super-bloated winter  of 2010. I’m talking Oprah Winfrey bloated people.

Resident Evil 4 confirmed for iPhone

re4_iphone

Earlier this afternoon Capcom announced what most of us already knew: that Resident Evil 4 would be coming to the iPhone.

The news came from a posting on Capcom’s Twitter account saying “News from Capcom Mobile: RE4 will be coming to iPhone end of July beginning with Japan, rest of world to follow shortly thereafter. Woo!”

Many of us already had clues this would be coming. Like the game being listed on the Japanese App Store, only to suspiciously be taken down soon after.

Between errant Tweets and App Store mishaps it seems like it’s getting harder and harder for developers and publishers to keep a secret. Not that they were good at it in the first place.

GameStop is still printing money

GameStop released their sales figres for Q1 of 2009 and there were some surprising figures buried in all of the numbers.

A telling sign of the tough financial times people are facing was GameStop’s used game sales, which  jumped by a whopping 31.9%. A clear indicator that gamers are still willing to pay for games, they are just going about it in a more money conscious way.

In the same quarter GameStop saw their new game sales fall by 2.8%. This figure may have been lower if it had not been propped back up by major Capcom releases Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5, as well as strong sales of the Nintendo DS and new DSi.

Overall sales for the retail chain rose 9.2% to $1.98 billion, up from $1.81 billion in the same quarter last year. The same quarter in 2008 that saw the release on Grand Theft Auto IV and Super Smash Bor. Brawl. Pretty impressive.

Despite the increase in over all sales, same store sales did fall 1.5% and they continue to see new console sales decline, mostly because of the European recession.

GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo is optimistic and looking forward to the sales figures that will pour in later in the year saying “We do expect the back half of this year to be stronger than the first half due to a full and wide-ranging new title lineup. All together, this places us in a prime position to capitalize on the growth in the market in the fall and holiday seasons.”

With Wal*Mart piloting it’s used game buy-back kiosks, GameStop has to be worried that the retail giant may take a big bite out of their used game monopoly. One of the saving graces of their business that helps them turn a decent profit no matter what the economic conditions are.

Bionic Commando demo on Xbox Live tomorrow?

We’ve known for a couple of weeks that the Bionic Commando demo would be coming out soon. But according to WonderWallWeb the demo will be coming out tomorrow. As in April 29th tomorrow.

There will be no Playstaion 3 demo. Sorry guys. And the demo will be multiplayer only and will feature team deathmatch on the Vertigo map. One of the sixteen multiplayer maps available.

There is nothing on Capcom’s site to confirm this yet. But I’ll keep an eye out and make any updates as needed. Keep your fingers crossed.

Dead Rising 2 trailer gets me giddy!

Do you like teeing off on zombie heads with a Louisville Slugger? Can you appreciate the fine art of carving re-animated carcases with chainsaws? And do you take the time to stop for a moment, have a cocktail and appreciate the finer things in life? You do. Well great because you’ll love the new trailer for Dead Rising 2.

It looks like Capcom is taking the formula that made the original Dead Rising so great, and then kicking it up a notch or two…or ten. And we aren’t complaining.

This time around you play the character of Chuck Green. And although the protagonist may be different, the rest of the Dead Rising equation looks the same. And that’s a good thing.

The game is set for release sometime in 2010 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. Now enough talk, check out the trailer:
