Three things I’d change about Modern Warfare 2

Take a look in any gaming forum or comment section of a gaming site and your likely to stumble upon heated debates between gamers who think Modern Warfare 2 is the greatest thing since free porn and those who just can’t stand it. Because of it’s huge popularity it’s become quite the polarizing subject, almost as heated as the Xbox 360 vs. the Playstation 3 debate. People have taken sides and mud is being slung. I’ll give my two cents on the subject…because my opinion is the only one that matters.

Hit the break to find out what changes I’d like to seen made.

Modern Warfare 2 gets patched

As I mentioned a few days ago in this post Infinity Ward submitted a patch to Microsoft last week that would fix some ridiculously annoying exploits in Modern Warfare 2. Today an update fixing those problems was rolled out. If you haven’t been prompted to download the update yet (I did earlier today) you will in the next few hours or so.

Here are the problems the patch should take care of:

  • Care Package, Emergency Airdrop, and Sentry Gun marker grenades sprint speed normalized.
  • Fix for “infinite care package” exploit.
  • Sentry Guns: Improved placement detection, preventing cases of Sentry Guns inside geometry.
  • Model 1887: Bling using Akimbo and FMJ combination now has same range and damage as non-Bling Model 1887s.
  • Fixes to prevent various XP hacks (including the prevention of negative XP)

It looks like it’ll be safe to play some Modern Warfare 2 again. It’s good to see Infinity Ward does what it can to get these glitches taken care of. Running into players with the Akimbo Model 1887 was never fun. Well at least if you were on the losing end of them anyway.

Modern Warfare 2 care package glitch getting fixed. Finally.

It’s happened to all of us. You are running around knifing people and popping off the occasional head-shot when you hear that voice pipe up on the TV “enemy care package incoming”. You don’t think too much of it, hopefully they get something lame like extra ammo or a UAV jammer. It doesn’t phase you. You just keep doing everything you can to kill and not be killed. And then you hear those words again “enemy care package incoming”. Something isn’t right. It’s pretty early in the match for someone to rack up enough kills for one, never-mind two care packages. You check the scoreboard and notice only one person on the other team has enough kills for a care package, but no one has enough for two.

Congratulations you are the latest victim of someone on the opposing team taking advantage of the care package glitch. The latest major glitch in Modern Warfare 2 to be exploited by douche bags with no skills.

But it’s OK help is on the way. Hit the break to find out when.

Steam’s top ten games for January 17-23

Steam has released it’s list of top selling games for the week of January 17-23. And pre-orders take four of the top five spots.

The biggest surprise is Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition taking the number two spot. The pre-order was only available for two out of the seven days. I expect it to handily take the number one spot from Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe Edition’s pre-order. Mass Effect 2 will be out this Tuesday.

Modern Warfare 2 myths put to the test

What if the show Mythbusters took their current gig into the digital realm? Testing out weird game glitches and physics inaccuracies? Well they haven’t done it yet, and they probably won’t anytime soon. But luckily defendthehouse.com has and we all get to sit back and enjoy.

They’ve posted a couple of videos on YouTube testing out certain myths about Modern Warfare 2 gameplay. Some are well known while others were new to me. Posted above is the second installment in the series, to check out their first vid head to their original post and check it out.

Let the debunking begin!

Yet another Modern Warfare 2 glitch…

The next in a long line of glitches exploited in Modern Warfare 2 has been found. No it’s not the Javelin glitch, or the infinite care package glitch, or the bouncing claymore glitch. This ladies and gentlemen is the Ice Skating glitch.

Instead of running at normal speeds, players zip across the screen as if they are “skating”. Making it ridiculously hard to shoot or melee anyone. From doing a little investigating I found out that the glitch is actually a PC mod that was somehow migrated to the Xbox 360 version.

Keep reading to check out the video.

Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer killstreak trailer

Thank you Robert Bowling. Thank you for releasing yet another Modern Warfare 2 epic nugget of sweetness for me to drool over.

Infinity Ward’s community manager has released the latest Modern Warfare 2 trailer via his Twitter and it’s AMAZING! The trailer highlights the new multiplayer killstreak perks. In this case the AC – 130, and it appears that you’ll need to get a killstreak of 11 to unlock it.

MW2-ac130

I’m anxious to see what other killstreak unlocks they’ll make available. You can’t tell much by the video. But it’s good to see them make some changes. The old system from Call of Duty 4 and World at War didn’t reward players after their seventh kill in a row. Chopper or dogs and that was it. Getting fifteen, twenty or even more kills didn’t get you anything other then a bloated ego.

As the release date draws near, I expect the onslaught of Modern Warfare 2 goodies to continue. And in no way is that a bad thing!

Amber Alert: Call of Duty title is missing!

hardened

By now everyone knows about the Prestige Edition of Modern Warfare 2. The internet was set ablaze by the video showcasing the functioning night vision goggles that are included with the package. If you haven’t seen what I’m talking about go to the homepage and take a look.

While you are watching take a look and see if you can notice anything missing? Besides the fact that a price is never mentioned (probably because it’s going to kick your wallet in the taint), not one of the products shown has Call of Duty in the title. It’s nowhere to be seen. Missing in action.

Are Infinity Ward and Activision still not seeing eye to eye when it comes to the game’s branding? Just a few days ago Activision made a statement reinforcing the fact that it will indeed feature COD in the title. And you can see it on the box are below:

Is Infinity Ward putting their foot down? And if so what will be the repercussions from Activision? Oh the drama!

Modern Warfare 2 makes nice with Call of Duty title again

It looks like the break up between Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 and the Call of Duty title have made up. I saw them at the movies last night and they were all over eachother.
Screenshots for the new box art have made their way to the web showcasing the Call of Duty badge.Something that wasn’t expected after Activision made it a point to remove the moniker from the game’s title a few months ago.
Activision had this to say:
“Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” a spokesperson told Kotaku. “We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.”
It’s interesting to see Infinity Ward and Activision make this move. I think Infinity Ward really wanted to lose the Call of Duty title so consumers wouldn’t confuse them with Treyarch who also developes Call of Duty games for Activision.
Activision may have laid down the law on this one.

Analyst prediction: Modern Warfare 2 will sell over 11 million copies

It’s pretty much a given that as long as Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t melt your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 or give you AIDS, it will sell like hot cakes.

And analysts agree. Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey is predicting that Modern Warfare 2 will sell over 11 million copies during 2009’s fiscal year alone. To put that in perspective, Call of Duty 4 has sold over 13 million copies to date. It’s the growing fan base of Call of Duty 4 and Waorld at War that Hickey thinks will be the key to Modern Warfare 2’s success.

“We estimate the combined Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 installed base for US and Europe has grown 125 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively since Modern Warfare’s November ‘07 release, ushering in a remarkably larger market opportunity for Modern Warfare 2,” said Hickey.

“In addition to the success of Modern Warfare, we believe the potential Modern Warfare 2 fan base grew with the holiday ‘08 release of Call of Duty: World at War, which management suggested one in five buyers were new franchise gamers,” said Hickey. “The game has sold an estimated 11 million units in 6 months, suggesting an additional 2 million potential Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 consumers this holiday.”

As long as the Call of Duty franchise continues to improve gameplay and bring new features to the table people will buy it. World at War is a great example of that. Call of Duty 4 had been out for a year when World at War was released. People still enjoyed playing Call of Duty 4 but they were ready for something new and different. The same can be said for those (like me) who are counting down the days to the release of Modern Warfare 2.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or a highly paid analyst for that matter, to figure out that Modern Warfare 2 is going to be huge. No pressure Infinity Ward, just try to make the best shooter ever. That’s all we ask.

What features do you want to see in Modern Warfare 2:The Poll

UPDATE: The Poll is now closed.

Modern Warfare 2 had an awesome showing at this year’s E3 Expo. Seeing all of that gameplay footage made my mouth water. New environments, weapons and features. So much to look forward to! I want to know what you guys are hoping they add to the game the second time around. What new features do you want to see?

There’s a new poll in the sidebar that asks that question: What feature would you most like to see in Modern Warfare 2?

The ten responses to the poll were the ten most popular answers on Infinity Ward’s Twitter. They are all good answers and you can only pick one, so choose wisely.

If there is a feature you really want to see in Modern Warfare 2 and it isn’t on the list feel free to add it in the comment section!

Click the break to see the eyegasmic trailer.
