The most popular console on the planet has jumped on the Netflix gravy train…albeit months behind the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.

It was announced today in the New York Times that Netflix and Nintendo have reached an agreement setting the stage for a spring release of the service on the Wii, allowing Netflix subscribers to stream certain movies and TV shows on the console. Of course the Wii does not support HD streaming as of yet, but this announcement leads some industry insiders to believe that a HD version of the console will be announced sometime next year.

The service will require users to insert an “instant streaming disc” into the Wii much like the users of the Playstation 3 have to do already. The disc is free and will be provided by Netflix.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime added that the addition of the Netflix service to the console was “a continuation of an effort to bring more and more entertainment to consumers who interact with the Wii.”
