PlayStation 3 users having issues connecting online

PlayStation Network

UPDATE: Sony has resolved the issue as of late last night. Those of you who are still having clock problems should reset the times manually. On a side now, I played on my 360 all night last night bwahahaha!!!

Owners of older PlayStation 3 consoles should not connect their unit the the PlayStation Network. As of right now, those that do will fall prey to a network error that will keep your console from being able to connect for online play. The issue seems to only effect owners of non-Slim PlayStations.

Sony is aware of the issue and wrote an update on their blog regarding the issue:

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

UFC 2009 Undisputed gets a price cut

THQ had a lot riding on UFC 2009 Undisputed. The publisher was a financial mess and really needed their marquis MMA game to do well. Luckily for them it did.

According to an announcement by THQ earlier today UFC 2009 Undisputed has sold 3.5 million copies to date. That includes both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales. Even with early issues with online play, the game was well received by critics (including myself) and fans of MMA bought the game in droves. And it has paid off huge for THQ.

To celebrate the game’s success it will get a price cut on both consoles, dropping the price to $29.99. A great deal for one of the best fighting sims on the market. A not-so-great deal if you were one of the 3.5 million people who forked over the full $59.99.

Dante’s Inferno to be featured during Super Bowl XLIV

EA is spending some serious cash to get the word out on their upcoming release Dante’s Inferno. And that trend will continue when they showcase a spot in this weekend’s Super Bowl match up between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints. Estimates have a regular 30 second spot during Sunday’s game costing around $3 million bucks. Not cheap.

The advertisement, titled “Hell Awaits”, will be shown sometime during the fourth quarter.

Xbox dominates top game rentals of 2009

According to Rentrak, a company who tracks video game rentals, Microsoft and the Xbox 360 “dominated” it’s top 20 list of most rented games in 2009 taking 17 out of the top 20 spots. Fallout 3 received top honors for the year.

Rentrak compiles their data by measuring “title-level performance via rental transactions from more than 65,000 DVD, Blu-ray Disc and Video Game properties in the brick-and-mortar, online, and kiosk channels across North America.” So all three major distribution methods are covered.

Interestingly enough the PlayStation 3 is nowhere to be seen on the list. The other three spots on the list not occupied by xbox 360 titles were occupied by Wii games Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Party 8.

Batman: Arkham Asylum gets a Game of the Year Edition

Although not formally announced by Eidos or Rocksteady, it seems as though a listing on the  British Board of Film Classification’s website has made it clear that Batman: Arkham Asylum will be re-releasing as a Game of the Year Edition.

According to the BBFC’s website the game passed with “not cuts made” and will be receiving a 15 rating, the same rating given to the original. No other details are revealed by the BBFC’s website as far as content goes. However it is safe to assume that the game will be packaged with previously released DLC and at a discounted price to entice gamers to fork over the cash.

Arkham Asylum 2 was announced in December. No release date was set, but it’s rumored that it will be available by the end of this year. Releasing a GOTY Edition of the first Arkham Asylum might be just enough to hold you over until the next chapter in Batman’s saga hits store shelves.

No PS3, you can’t come to the Splinter Cell: Conviction party

Splinter-Cell-Conviction1

It’s been known for alittle while now that Splinter Cell: Conviction will be an Xbox 360 exclusive. And we’ve been given the usual political reasons for it, like this one brought up in a developer Q & A in the Ubisoft forums:

Question by apostam24:
Q. I saw the splinter cell conviction gameplay today but then I found out that it isn’t coming out on the PS3. Why would you do that ?
A. Splinter Cell conviction is a true Microsoft exclusive title and there are no plans to have Splinter Cell Conviction on other platforms. There are several reasons behind this choice. First of all, Splinter Cell games are historically linked with Microsoft platforms. The first Splinter Cell on the original Xbox was one of the first games to fully exploit the console’s technical possibilities. At that time, Microsoft really believed in the game potential and provided strong support to promote it. So, there is a “link of heart” between the franchise and the platform. Some games are like this (think of Final Fantasy for instance). The second reason behind this choice is purely linked to production. Having a single target platform means that we can optimize the game even further, because we only have one type of – console – hardware to support.

Sounds pretty sweet and endearing huh? “Microsoft really believed in the game potential and provided strong support to promote it. So, there is a “link of heart” between the franchise and the platform. ” If only it were that simple.

In an interview with Kikizo (who by the way has scored some great interviews lately) Ubisoft’s Steven Masters has a different explanation behind Ubi’s strategy. And this time it was more dollars and cents than “link of heart”:

“Ubisoft as a company now has a lot of experience with PS3. Our processes, tools, techniques are very well-developed – we could absolutely execute on the PS3 if we had the opportunity, but like I said it was a business decision.”

Looks like Microsoft is really playing hardball lately. I can just imagine how much money they had to fork over to get this “link of heart”.

The silver DualShock 3 controllers were released into the wild

Just as I reported to you back in April, the expected release of the silver DualShock 3 controllers has happened. Sony Playstation 3 owner can now look in awe at this fancy new piece of modern technology. If you don’t mind forking over $54.99 that is.

Although we still can’t buy the silver Playstation 3 to match (unlike our Japanese counterparts) an announcement for the metallic shaded console should be right around the corner hopefully. And let’s not forget to hold out hope for our White PS3 either. You damn Japanese are so spoiled.

Bionic Commando swings it’s way into obscurity

Grin’s first global release isn’t doing so hot. The Swedish game developers reloading of the popular old school game Bionic Commando has sold only 27,000 copies for all of May in the U.S. That’s with Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 sales combined. Ouch.

This has put a damper on Capcom’s hopes of expanding their reach out of Japan and getting a firm grasp on the elusive North American market.

“One of the key words we had to focus on was ‘globalisation’ and being able to sell our games on a global scale – not just Japan – was going to be one of the things to help us out of this pit,” said producer Ben Judd during an April press event.

Sales in the U.S. as a whole weren’t spectacular last month. The industry saw a 23% drop in sales revenue.

While the game was entertaining at times, it did receive some lackluster reviews. And complaints on a less than ideal swing mechanic, the frustrating invisible radiation zones and a pretty unspectacular multiplayer mode couldn’t have helped sales much either. Maybe next time.

Analyst prediction: Modern Warfare 2 will sell over 11 million copies

It’s pretty much a given that as long as Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t melt your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 or give you AIDS, it will sell like hot cakes.

And analysts agree. Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey is predicting that Modern Warfare 2 will sell over 11 million copies during 2009’s fiscal year alone. To put that in perspective, Call of Duty 4 has sold over 13 million copies to date. It’s the growing fan base of Call of Duty 4 and Waorld at War that Hickey thinks will be the key to Modern Warfare 2’s success.

“We estimate the combined Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 installed base for US and Europe has grown 125 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively since Modern Warfare’s November ‘07 release, ushering in a remarkably larger market opportunity for Modern Warfare 2,” said Hickey.

“In addition to the success of Modern Warfare, we believe the potential Modern Warfare 2 fan base grew with the holiday ‘08 release of Call of Duty: World at War, which management suggested one in five buyers were new franchise gamers,” said Hickey. “The game has sold an estimated 11 million units in 6 months, suggesting an additional 2 million potential Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 consumers this holiday.”

As long as the Call of Duty franchise continues to improve gameplay and bring new features to the table people will buy it. World at War is a great example of that. Call of Duty 4 had been out for a year when World at War was released. People still enjoyed playing Call of Duty 4 but they were ready for something new and different. The same can be said for those (like me) who are counting down the days to the release of Modern Warfare 2.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or a highly paid analyst for that matter, to figure out that Modern Warfare 2 is going to be huge. No pressure Infinity Ward, just try to make the best shooter ever. That’s all we ask.

What features do you want to see in Modern Warfare 2:The Poll

UPDATE: The Poll is now closed.

Modern Warfare 2 had an awesome showing at this year’s E3 Expo. Seeing all of that gameplay footage made my mouth water. New environments, weapons and features. So much to look forward to! I want to know what you guys are hoping they add to the game the second time around. What new features do you want to see?

There’s a new poll in the sidebar that asks that question: What feature would you most like to see in Modern Warfare 2?

The ten responses to the poll were the ten most popular answers on Infinity Ward’s Twitter. They are all good answers and you can only pick one, so choose wisely.

Review: X-men Origins:Wolverine Xbox 360

X-men Origins:Wolverine has a fetish for blood. Not a drop here and a smudge there, but buckets of the stuff. The intro cinematic alone would be enough to make the Red Cross jealous. But it’s the over-the-top gore and action that makes the game fun to play. Although it may be a little repetitive at times, and there are a few bugs along the way, it really doesn’t detract from the overall experience. The game is fun to just pick up and play, period.

Metal Gear Solid:Rising update

I first reported to you back on June 1 that Metal Gear Solid: Rising would be coming to the Xbox 360. This announcement was one of the highlights of Microsoft’s keynote speech during the opening day of E3 2009. However, painfully absent from the announcement  were details if it would be an exclusive or not. Three days later we now have an answer.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be releasing for the Playstation 3, PC and the already announced Xbox 360.

“Even more gamers can [now] immerse themselves in the franchise and experience the ground breaking series as Metal Gear Solid: Rising heads to the platform of their choice.” says Martin Scheider of Konami Europe.

Sony’s E3 Uncharted 2 live gameplay footage

Earlier today Sony showed the world for the first time some extended play of their upcoming game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The game looks as amazing as the original if not more. The texture shading, shadow and reflection effects look outstanding. And Nathan Drake’s interaction with his surrounding environment is great as well. The way he climbs objects and scales walls look more natural and less pre-programmed. Very fluid overall.

There are a few instances in the video where you can still see that the camera angle does get a little awkward, but it still looks like an improvement over the original Uncharted title. And the gun play looks improved as well. Aiming seems less painstaking and more natural this time around.

GameStop has the game listed with a 10/01/09 release date. Click here to pre-order your copy.

Check out the gameplay footage and let me know what you think.
